After more than 30 years, the Museo Tamayo was closed for one year (August 2011 -August 2012) for its architectural renovation and enlargement. Fortunately for the museum, the architect Gonzalez de Leon, one of the original authors of the building along with Abraham Zabludovsky, designed and conducted the intervention of the building, allowing him to return to one of his most prized works and to study it carefully. The Museum reopened on Sunday August 26th with new spaces to offer more exhibits, facilities and a range of activities aimed at creating a transformative experience and training around contemporary art for everyone. The building has grown 30%, while retaining its iconic form and aesthetics. In the words of González de León “the same forms were extended, as a growing plant, new branches came out of the building with the same plastic spirit.”
